Oxfordshire based racehorse trainer Charlie Longsdon has now been training for six years. Having started with just ten horses in his first season, he had sixty during the last campaign and is aiming to build up to having over seventy horses for the 2012/13 season. In his six years he has trained over 180 winners, with the highlights being Songe's win in the Blue Square Chamion Hurdle Trial at Haydock in January 2009, Palypso de Creek's run in the Grand National in 2010 and more recently Paintball's Imperial Cup win at Sandown this Spring and Up To Something's win in the big DBS Bumper at Newbury.
The 2011-12 season was by far Charlie's most successful season to date. Having set out with a target of 50 winners and over £300,000 in prize money. He was delighted to win 69 National Hunt races and 2 flat races making it 71 winners in total. The 69 National Hunt winners were from just 349 runners, at a strike rate of 20% and that saw him 13th (23rd last season) in the trainer's title and 11th in numerical winners. He also broke the £300,000 barrier winning just over £380,000 in prize money. To a one pound stake, if you had backed all of Charlie's horses, you would have had a healthy profit of over £56. These are great statistics which Charlie is extremely proud of and were only bettered last season by Henderson, Nicholls and McCain. Charlie is gradually getting a stronger team, and he is aiming to have over 70 winners and to break the £500,000 barrier in prize money won this 2012/13 season. He is also keen to be challenging for more of the bigger prizes this season and build on the DBS and Imperial Cup success from last season. With the likes of Paintball, Vulcanite, Hazy Tom, Grandad's Horse and Universal Soldier he will hopefully be able to do this.
Charlie has an expanding team behind him who are extremely dedicated and ambitious. They pride themselves on happy, healthy horses and believe this is shown in the results. We have a fantastic set of owners, most of whom have been with us since the early stages of his career and they help to make Charlie Longsdon Racing a very close knit team.
