SHARP RISE

Last night I received the horrible news that Sharp Rise was seriously ill in America. All had been fine after his gallant third in the American Grand National last month and he was being prepped for The Colonial Cup in Camden, South Carolina next weekend before his return to the UK....

However a couple of days ago he got an infection and the anti-biotics he received triggered him getting an acute form of colitis with colic like symptoms. As a result he went in to the vets last night for an operation, sadly they could not save him and he had to be euthanased.... Enough of the glum talk, we should talking about what he has achieved, not only for us but before we ever knew him.

Sharp Rise ran 21 times in just the two years he ran on the racecourse. Of those 21 times, he won 9 races. The first of his five wins came for Pauline Robson and David Parker up in Northumberland. We were then lucky enough to buy him this Spring from the Goffs UK Sale at Doncaster.

In the five months we had him he ran seven times, winning four of those races (arguably unlucky not to win six), amassing about £80,000 in prize money and him giving us the adventure of a lifetime.... His handicap mark rose from 132 to 156 and I am massively in debt to the horse for giving us such fun and taking both the owner and ourselves here at Hull Farm on such a 'ride.'

This last month he has been in America where he received huge exposure in the media and I hope, in the long term, it will help boost UK runners going over to the USA. Racing over there is a magical experience which i would recommend to anyone. He ran a very honourable third in The American Grand National at Far Hills - he did not run his best race and would have gone a lot closer in ten days time. However tragedy has struck and we will now not be able to see what he could have achieved.

He has left a huge hole in the yard. Paddy did everything with him when over here and Marcus went to the States with tthe horse. You do not like to get too attached to these horses as you never know what might happen. But it was very hard not to be fond of  this lad as he was so tough and hardy and to achieve what he did in such a short space of time is extremely hard. I certainly owe him a huge amount and I doubt I will have as hardy a horse as him again..... RIP my old friend
