26 September 2018

It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Bentelimar.

Bentelimar only joined us in October last year from Shay Barry’s yard and he proved to be a great addition to the team. He was the winner of a bumper, 4 hurdles, 2 chases and over £150,000. His bumper win and 2 novice hurdle wins were for Phillip Fenton before he joined Shay Barry’s in 2014. He won 2 further hurdles including a Listed Novice Hurdle at Punchestown in February 2015 and a Novice Chase in June 2017 at Wexford. He joined us after finishing 6th in the Kerry National and unseating in the Galway Plate in October 2017.

He was ultra-consistent in his runs for us in top class handicaps throughout last season, culminating in a memorable day at Aintree.

Forever the gentleman, he was extremely popular among the team. He will always be remembered at Hull Farm for being my first Aintree Festival winner when he won the Red Rum Handicap Chase in April under Johnny. He was a horse we were massively excited about this season, having found a strong run 2 miles to be the key to him and were very much looking forward to him running in all the decent handicaps through the winter. He had been in great form since returning from his break and had looked fabulous when parading at our Open Afternoon 10 days ago. Unfortunately, Aintree will be his pinnacle and he will never be able to prove himself any further.

Bentelimar will leave a massive hole in the yard and will be greatly missed by everyone especially Fern who looked after him and Johnny who rode him in most of his races for us. Our thoughts are with his owner’s: Charlie and Tim of The Swanee River Partnership. We all try not to get too attached to these horses however he was a great servant to us in his short period and we will forever be indebted to him for Aintree.

RIP Bentelimar
